Executive Search: Non-executive Chairman

A leading wind turbine installation contractor founded over 60 years ago. Offering mechanical and electrical engineering services to the wind industry both offshore and onshore, the business has strong relationships with all the major wind turbine manufacturers. Backed by a well established private equity firm with over 20 years’ history of investing in asset-based businesses in the UK and Western Europe. With a €800m fund they typically invest in businesses with an enterprise value of €50m to €1bn. Focused on complex carve-outs of assets to buy-and-builds, the fund is a generalist investor with expertise across industrial, healthcare, utilities and transport sectors amongst others.

Scope To recruit a Non-Executive Chair to support the management team for the next stage of its growth. With a long history and strong reputation for innovation, the business plan was to continue its growth in the sector as well as expand into adjacent markets and the Chair would need experience of doing this in the appropriate markets. The business was also going through a transition from being run by second-generation family founder to bringing in an external Managing Director; the Chair was therefore required to also bring softer skills including strong communication and mentoring capabilities to assist the team make this transition.

Process We tapped into our extensive network of industry experts built over many years of focus on private equity and introduced the fund to various potential candidates with the appropriate skills and background.
Outcome The investor and business agreed on the final candidate who joined the business approximately 6 weeks after closing. The Chair brought an excellent combination of strategic, technical, financial and operational experience teamed with a passion for industrial technology, especially related to renewable energy. Strong communication and interpersonal skills enabled him to build good relationships with highly technical engineers, developing mutual respect enabling both the technical and commercial demands to be met. Bringing a measured, motivating and supporting style he was able to step in and support the team through the transition.
